African big-headed ant (ABHA)- Infestation response update

Following the discovery of ABHA (Pheidole megacephala) on the Island, steps will be taken this month to control and contain the species within the known infestation site.

Delimiting surveys using non-toxic lures (dog food) will be carried out in the settlement on Friday 3 May 9am-3pm to determine the extent of the infestation. This start date will be dependent on the weather as the success of survey is dependent on dry and warm ambient conditions (24 - 30°C).

The areas to be surveyed are shown on the below map.

Signage will be in place at the flagstaff and under the pines prior to and for the duration of the survey.

How you can help

Please do not interfere with survey markers once the survey has started.

Please keep dogs away from the lures that will be placed next to the survey markers.

Next steps after survey

Once survey data has been collected and analysed, baiting of the infestation will commence during the next available period of suitable weather within May.

The ant bait that will be used are as follows:

Amdro:                        active constituent: 7.3g/Kg Hydramethylnon

Distance Plus:             active constituent: 5g/kg Pyriproxyfen

Advion Ant Gel:           active constituent: 0.5 g/kg Indoxacarb

Scheduled ant baiting

A scheduled prophylactic (preventative) treatment for ants using Amdro will also be carried out around the jetty area on Friday 3 May in anticipation of the arrival of the Island Trader on Saturday.
