Lagoon Foreshore clean-up

LHIB will conduct a survey and cleanup of the lagoon foreshore over the coming weeks to improve the usability, safety, and visual amenity of the area.

As acknowledged in the Lagoon Foreshore Management Plan, there is a need to store small watercraft within some areas of the foreshore. However, it is undesirable that derelict or unused items remain in situ on the foreshore.

  • The only items permitted to be stored are small watercraft (<6m), which may include part of a watercraft (such as an oar).
  • Other items associated with small watercraft (e.g. fuel containers, life jackets, unattached motors etc.) are not permitted to be left on the foreshore unless they are stored neatly and securely within a vessel.
  • Watercraft may only be stored in the foreshore area if you are a resident of LHI and/or live on the island for at least 8 months out of the year.
  • Watercraft must not be stored in the foreshore area if they are unused for a period of four consecutive months or more.
  • If you plan on leaving the Island or know that you will not be using your watercraft for at least four months, please move your watercraft to an alternative storage location, such as your place of residence.
  • Items that are not watercrafts will be requested by LHIB to be removed by the owner.
  • Watercraft found to be left disused in the foreshore area for an extended period will be requested by LHIB to be removed by the owner.

Requests to store items on the foreshore outside these criteria will be assessed on their merits by the LHIB.

Identification of unattended items

In accordance with the Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021, attempts will be made to identify and contact owners of unattended items.

Numbered tags will be attached to any items whose owners cannot be identified. Please do not remove these tags. If you find your item tagged, please contact the LHIB with the tag number to claim ownership of the item.

If you know the owner of a disused item, you can assist by letting them know that their property will need to be moved from the foreshore area to an alternate storage location.

Removal of unclaimed items

After a period of 14 days from being tagged, any unclaimed, disused or unauthorised items will be removed from the foreshore and relocated to a LHIB storage site.

A recovery fee associated with the removal and storage of the item will be levied to the owners upon their collection ($175).

Items that have not been collected within a 28-day period from being taken possession of by the LHIB will be either disposed of or sold.

The LHIB would also like to remind vessel owners:

  • The storage of small private boats and/or trailers (<6 m) is not permitted in the boat ramp area for any longer than 48 hours.
  • The short-term storage of larger vessels for repairs and maintenance is time-limited and subject to approval.

Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining this valued shared space.
