Severe weather warning for damaging surf and damaging winds

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued the following warning:

Tropical Cyclone Alfred to the north is forecast to approach the Island during Tuesday before turning to move away to the west towards southeast Queensland.

The cyclone will bring very windy conditions with heavy swell. An easterly swell is forecast to exceed 5 metres from early Tuesday afternoon until the early hours of Thursday morning, possibly reaching as high as around 8 metres late Tuesday and early Wednesday. These large and powerful surf conditions may produce localised damage and coastal erosion. Beach conditions will be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed area.

Damaging winds with average speeds exceeding 65 km/h are likely to develop from early Tuesday afternoon and persist until the early hours of Thursday morning, possibly exceeding 75 km/h late Tuesday and early Wednesday, with peak wind gusts reaching up to around 100 km/h.

The NSW State Emergency Services (SES) advise you:

  • Stay indoors away from windows and keep children indoors.
  • Check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary raise goods and electrical items.
  • Stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.

For emergency help in floods and storms, call the Lord Howe Island Police on (02) 6563 2199.
