Woodhen Survey to commence 18 November
The next Woodhen Survey will take place from Monday 18 November.
Annual surveys of the Lord Howe Woodhen population have been conducted since 1985 and it is one of Australia’s longest ongoing bird population monitoring projects. The aim of the survey is to assess the long-term success of the captive breeding program, population recovery following the REP, and estimate the population of woodhens in the settlement area and Permanent Park Preserve.
LHIB staff will need to access leases in the settlement to conduct the survey.
Leaseholders will be contacted to organise a suitable time for a team to visit, at least 24-hours prior to survey activity or as per their predetermined contact preference.
The previous Woodhen Survey in December 2022 captured the highest population number since surveys began in 1985. A total of 1,147 individuals were recorded across the Island.
Alternative monitoring techniques will be trialled alongside this years’ survey to develop a methodology for the future that ensures ongoing protection of the species while minimising intervention activities.
Reducing woodhen roadkill
LHIB continues to record elevated numbers of roadkill incidents. Woodhen roadkill is one of the main human associated impacts on the species. Residents and visitors are encouraged to observe speed limits and take care to avoid ground bird traversing road and road verges.
To help understand and manage the impact of roadkill on the species, please report roadkill, including location and band number (where possible), to the LHIB Environment Team on 6563 2066 or email: [email protected]
